Events

A fun historical event that history buffs and locals love is Florida Flywheeler’s. This event brings history to life three times a year, November, January and February. These events loring 35,000 visitors a year to our area. Centered around a recreated old village, Florida Flywheeler’s exhibits include antique engines and tractors, an old firehouse, old gas station, model T cars and more. Tractor pulls are also offered during this event.

Fort Meade has traditionally been the kind of town where residents participate in regular community events. With several events happening throughout the year and new events taking shape, good things are in store.

In January spend the weekend at the Alafia River Rendezvous, the Southeast’s largest pre-1840s interpretive encampment. Participants portray several cultures and the lifestyle of early settlers. You’ll enjoy sarsaparilla, old fashioned root beer, the various cuisines of the time and just interacting with the frontiersmen and women. Over 100 craftsmen and stores set up shop so whether you’re buying or browsing there’s plenty to discover.

Other fun events include Christmas on Broadway and the Red Hot & Blue July 4th Celebration. The Maypole celebration signifies the beginning of springtime. Elementary school students gather together at the Fort Meade Historical Museum to join and spectate the Maypole dance with its kaleidoscope of ribbons and flowers. Held in July, young fishing enthusiasts ages 4 to 14 can participate in the All-American Fishing Derby at Patterson Park coordinated by Leisure Services, 863-285-1111.

The Saturday before Halloween is a costume contest at Patterson Park. Keep a lookout for more new events yet to come. Contact the Fort Meade Chamber of Commerce for more information.

COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING CHORALE
When: 11/11/2010
Where: TBA
About:

What better way to bring friends and neighbors together than to have a community musical event for Thanksgiving.

The chorale will be directed by participating church choir/school chorus directors and community talent. This way, the chorale members will enjoy learning the different styles and selections of other directors.

Directors will bring their accompanists and a selection of securlar and traditional numbers relating to ... being thankful, of course.  It does not all have to be serious.  There will be a place for it all.

Any church or school music director may register their choir/chorus members to be a part of this event by contacting the Chamber.  And any individuals wanting to be a part of the chorale may also call the Chamber to register.

The number of selections each director presents will be determined in September.

Practice will be weekly beginning October.

Donations will be collected for HELP of Fort Meade, which can use the funds to feed local families a good Thanksgiving dinner.
